Notes on graph:
1. Developed countries use less than 10% of total energy consumed as food.
2. Although food (energy), water, and oxygen are required by almost all living things, developed countries use 10 to 100 times more energy
      to run machines and to create houses, buildings, transportation systems, communication systems, and works of art and science.

Food energy used is estimated at 3,400 Btu per person per year (See note 2 below table.).

Notes:
1. Including an estimate of food energy reduces the standard deviation of efficiency significantly.
2. Oxidation of one mole, 180 grams, of glucose will yield 686,000 chemical calories, or 3,811 calories/gm.
     A person cannot live on one gram of glucose per day. This has led the nutritionist to use kilocalories as 
     their basic unit. Since 180 grams of glucose will yield 686 kilocalories and a person requires about 2,350 
    chemical kilocalories per day, a person requires about (2350/686)*180 = 617 grams of glucose per day.
    Since one Btu = 251,996 chemical calories, a person consumes about 2,350,000 calories/251,996
    or 9.33 Btu/day. Thus, each person will consume about: 9.33 Btu/day times 365 = 3400 Btu/year
    as energy from food.
